My Image Dress

I really like knit dresses, both for work and casual but good
patterns I find, are hard to come by.  I stumbled across My Image Patterns which are similar in nature to Burda Style but I think more suited to the casual style which we tend to prefer here in New Zealand.  I did a little Google research which I am prone to do, and for some reason they are not popular.  Undeterred I ordered four magazines at $10 each which works out more economical than buying Burda at the bookshop.  This dress, M1409 from issue Spring/Summer 2014 is my first
project.

The fabric I chose was a lovely stable textured cotton lycra in a black and white stripe.  I love this fabric so was a little nervous about wasting it.

According to my measurements I should be a size 36, so initially this is the pattern I drew up.  After measuring my pieces though I realised I actually needed to make a size 38.

The instructions have a self faced drape cowl but from experience these always inevitably flip out so this feature was quickly changed to a fully lined front bodice.  I did this with a piece of white cotton interlock from my stash.  I also made binding for both the neck and armholes which was not part of the instructions but I felt gave a neater finish.

The bigger size in the end only needed running in at the armpits to create a perfect fit.  I love my new dress and I would happily make up this style again in the future.

  1. I LOVE your new dress. I think the turn off factor for these magazines is the utterly horrible fabrics they use. The shapes are great!

    1. Thank you! I actually quite like the fabric in the picture but agree, it is far too busy to show off the lovely pleat detail and drape in the dress.

  2. I have quite a few MyImage magazines and have just not quite got round to making anything up. They do seem a lot more practical than Burda (more real clothes, less high fashion). Thanks for sharing this.

  4. Indeed, very nice dress. Your comment about New Zealand's more casual style made me smile. Last January, I was lucky enough to travel across both of your gorgeous islands. When the owner of a kayak rental shop learned that we were from Montreal, he laughed and said that when in our city, he consistently felt under-dressed. My husband and I both chuckled too because he DEFINITELY had a very laid back style, a lot more than we're used to seeing in our city (vs. the beach where he's from). I'm not suggesting that your dress is as laid back as the instructor because it's not, it's casual but can be dressed up and down and is lovely. It's just that your comment brought back wonderful memories of a fantastic trip and I wanted to share. Thanks!

    1. Thank you for commenting. Yes, I think on the whole, we are pretty much the number 8 wire, take us as you find us society and the way we dress reflects that.

  5. I love your dress and I'm so happy to see this pattern made up so beautifully. This was on my to-do list last summer and I never got to it, but your lovely version is making me want to pull out the magazine and make one right now.

  6. Great dress, and thanks for the handy tip to line the dress because I hate it when the cowl flips out too. I have this issue and have been meaning to make something from it too - perhaps I'll push it closer to the top of the queue after seeing your success

  7. Great dress. As you say it has a few interesting features with the pleats , asymmetry and cowl. Quite different to anything I have seen made up for a while.

    1. Thank you. I think the pleats and the cowl is what drew me to it.

  8. I love this dress and the fabric that you've made it up in. I agree really nice knit fabric dresses are hard to come by. Can't wait to see the other garments you make from the mags.
