Cocoon In Red

My end of winter procurement visit to Cotura Fashions a couple of weeks back, netted 5 varied pieces of knit fabric, one of which was a lovely red piece of poly lycra sweater knit.  I envisaged for it a cocoon cardigan.  For one cardigan though, I could not justify the cost of a new pattern .  I decided to Frankenpattern another pattern to get the desired shape.

I cut the front on the fold and removed 4cm from each side of the centre front.  I then split my front up the middle and reshaped the neckline to a gentle V, and the front hem also to a gentle curve.  I then cut two 12cm bands which I joined together forming one long band and placed the seams at both the shoulders and side hem seam allowances.  To keep with the band theme I also added bands to the sleeves.

I am really happy with how this worked out and if I can find some more suitable fabric I will definitely make another.

  1. Your cardi is really lovely. Did you shape the bands to fit the curved hem or cut them straight? The fabric is beautiful too.

    1. Thank you! I cut them straight. The fabric has some stretch so it was a matter of easing and stretching where appropriate until I was happy with the way it sat.

  2. I'm impressed that you frankenpatterned rather than buying a new one - and you've done a superb job. Definitely make another one!

  5. Hurray I've found a Christchurch blogger! While I don't blog, I sew, and am hanging out for The Fabric Store opening next month! Can you tell me about Cotura Fashions fabric? Were they in Bedford Row pre earthquakes? Also have you tried Sakagucci for fabric?

    1. Cotura Fashions are in Mainsouth Road Sockburn behind Instep childrens footwear. They manufacture but sell their ends of rolls to the public. They are open during business hours. I am not sure where they were before the earthquakes but they were not in their current location. Thanks for the heads up re Sakagucci. I must check them out
