Burdastyle 07/2017 119

Burdastyle's July 2017 issue has to be one of my favourites to date.  There are many different patterns that I have marked in my usual fashion with little Post-It Notes, just waiting for the right fabric and occasion to make them up.  This is the first of many I suspect.

It all started with a piece of border print rayon that I picked up from Fabric Vision's sale table.  At $10 per metre, it wasn't really a bargain but I loved it anyway and it was added to the stash.  I had Burdastyle 07/2017 119 in mind for the fabric for quite some time but was rather paralyzed with indecision when I realised that the sleeve flounce was recommended to be made of reversible fabric.  In the end I threw caution to the wind and just went ahead anyway figuring that my arms would hide most of the reverse anyway.

As per my normal Burdastyle sizing, I cut the pattern to size 38, grading to 40 at the hips.  This was when my plans nearly derailed completely.  Despite Burdastyle's instructions, which are limited at the best of times, I really couldn't get my head around how those flounces actually were constructed.  The origami just wasn't computing in my head.  I think I looked at that pattern for two whole days before I managed to complete the puzzle!

This really was a quick sew and those flounces are really not as difficult as they first seem.  I did leave out the front opening because I figured there was enough going on with my fabric and the flounces, and I had already worked out I could pull the top on over my head without the opening anyway.  I simply finished the neckline with a regular facing.

Rayon proved to be a great choice for this top.  I really love wearing it.  The fabric drapes and moves beautifully and surprisingly enough when the mornings are cold, which they are now, I can wear a cardigan over the top.  Would I make this again?  I would have to say no, simply because I fear flounces are around for a good time and not a long time.  I would however recommend this pattern.

  1. Very nice. Gotta agree with your view that flounces are here for a good time not a long time but this is a great way to enjoy them! I made the top too and had trouble with the instructions.

    1. It is certainly a bit of a brain teaser this pattern.

  2. I love your top and the fabric. In fact I thnk it is better than burdas . In the long run more expensive fabric ends up lasting longer and being loved more ( in my case anyway ).

  3. I am still puzzling out how to do the flounces and there are no resources online. Mind sharing how you figured it out?

    1. It requires folding the flounce along the fold line and stitching it down and then folding it back on itself. When you look at the pattern it does seem a little complicated at first but makes perfect sense when you see how the pieces fit together.
