McCall's Belcarra Frankenpattern

Buoyed by the success of my McCall's top, I was left wondering how a frankenpattern of the two would work.

I had a piece of textured polyester Georgette which I recently added to my stash at Cotura's summer sale and although at 1.5m was too big for this top, I threw caution to the wind and dove in.

For this exercise, I chose to remove the sleeve seam and cut the top in two pieces. I then shaped the hem according to the McCall's pattern and narrowed the neckline as I did with my previous Belcarra's.

What I have ended up with is a tunic length top that I will most likely wear with jeans and slim fitting trousers but will also work tucked into a skirt.  This top actually fills a large gap in my summer and autumn wardrobe.  A white staple shell that goes with everything is a much needed item and I am sure will get a lot of wear.

A little bit about my backdrop here.  I spent Easter weekend camping in the Mackenzie Basin.  As you can see this area like so many other areas around New Zealand has seen very little rain over the summer.  Anything green is pretty well nonexistent!  We had beautiful summer daytime temperatures all weekend.  Autumn as we know it is yet to arrive so my short sleeved top will get some wear before the weather turns cold.

  1. I like the way you've combined the two patterns - it looks like a really versatile little white top.I think we've had our last look at warm temps for a while so I'm madly scrambling to sew some new winter gear.

    1. I know that is going to happen here too and I suspect tomorrow could be the day! I should have been more prepared but with the weather so nice it was easier to bury my head in the sand. I have made a few things with sleeves however.

  2. Lovely top. I can't believe how brown NZ looks. Very chilly here in Sydney.

    1. It is usually quite dry in this area in the summer but it has been exceptionally dry this year. I could probably count on the fingers of one hand the number of days it has actually rained since Christmas. I am sure the farmers think differently but as a towny; long may it continue!

  3. Very successful frankenpattern. This top is bound to be a workhorse in your wardrobe. I am shocked at how dry the landscape is. I always think of New Zealand as being very green (even though I have never been there). It is very green here...we have had an unusually wet summer season this year.

    1. Thank you! Like anywhere I guess, it depends on where in New Zealand you go, how green it is. Generally though, the West Coast is the high rainfall area and the Eastern areas are the dry areas. If you came here in the winter though, the whole country would be pretty green.
