and ended with this dress at Christmas.

In between I have made a staggering:

3 coats
8 skirts
1 jersey

This is without including all of the items I have made for my children.

The Bookkeeping

In total I spent $1198.13 on items for myself.  Of the patterns that I have made up, I have sold $157.00 worth, bringing my total down to $1041.13.  But, I also bought myself a new sewing machine this year, for which I paid $1400.00 on sale, bringing the final cost of my hobby to $2441.13, or $46.94 per week.  As far as vices go, I don't consider that too bad!

Plans for 2013

I have been reviewing my wardrobe while writing up this post and also in my sewing down time while camping, and I really don't have much of a pressing need for anything new in my wardrobe.  That is not to say however, that I do not want anything new.  I still have a couple of summer bits of fabric to make up but I think for 2013 I will be focusing more on trying new techniques and perhaps making a few things that I haven't tried before.  I have quite a good collection of tried and true patterns now so these will definitely be making a reappearance this year and I do have a hankering for a couple of new ones, particularly Sewaholic Cordova so this is on my wish list for autumn.

You are probably wondering whether I intend to continue my little bookkeeping exercise this year and the answer is yes.  I have found the process quite enlightening and also useful for planning for the new year.  I may just tweak it a little but I haven't quite decided how yet.

  1. Golly gosh ! Basically I really liked everything you sewed - it must have been quite hard choosing your favourites. Really $40 + per week for your hobby is nothing and that has included your sewing machine which in reality will last for decades. How many hobbies have something concrete to show for them at the end of the day - whats more the end results are actually useful as well as beautiful .

    1. My favourites are closely related to what I wear most or feel good in. My husband often jokes about how much I spend on fabric so seeing as he reads my blog he should be pretty impressed.

  2. Ohhh, you have to keep it going, because 2013 total will be minus the machine! That is when you really start to see everything being of real value. Love all that you made...

    1. I will definitely be keeping it going but I am tempted to add in a rtw purchase total so I can see the comparison between the two.

  3. Wow - you've had a very productive year. More than a few times this year you've inspired me to pull out a particular pattern and get sewing. I'm really looking forward to seeing all your new creations in 2013.

    1. I hope I can continue to inspire next year. I suspect though, given the number of patterns I have had success with, there may be less pattern purchases which would probably be a good thing.

  4. There are some beautiful garments here! I really like the idea of book keeping. I should try to be as organised!
    Happy New Year! x

    1. My book keeping system is not that complicated. It involves a 20c notebook that I carry around with me and jot down my purchases as I go.

Happy New Year to you too!

  5. Goodness, when you see it all written down like that you've had a very impressive year. One of my goals for this year is to sew more actual clothing for myself. The kids at school are always asking if I made this or that and I'd really like to be able to say yes more often. My favorite is your paua dress, I think it's stunning.

    1. You should. I am sure your students would be inspired. I like the paua dress as well. My husband was with me when I bought the fabric. I don't think he could see my vision.

  6. You are the prolific sewist I used to think I was :) Love that you've done a weekly cost average - makes it seem entirely reasonable really! Some people would spend that just on buying lunches at work I would imagine. Here's to sewing in 2013 :)

  7. Wow, you're a dynamo! That's quite a number..

I admire your bookkeeping discipline. I wonder if I should try it in 2013: I have one receipt already!!

    1. The discipline involves writing down each fabric purchase in the back of my notebook and crossing it off as I make it up. I then write down a detailed costing in the front as I make each item. It takes only a couple of minutes. Just as well really as it has to be simple or I wouldn't have stuck to it.

  9. Excellent round up. I haven't kept any track of costing - and think that I am unlikely to, since I know that my overall spend on my hobby is high (despite my love of Darn Cheap Fabrics). I'm very glad that I found your blog this year - you have directly inspired a number of my projects!
